About the event

William Wells Brown was the first African American published as a novelist and playwright. Brown was born enslaved in the early 1800s in Kentucky, until escaping in 1834. Hear Brown’s story, as told by Chautauqua performer Virgil Covington, Jr., in “How I Got My Name.”

Following the Chautauqua performance, stay to enjoy refreshments and visit with local authors who will have copies of their books available for purchase and signing.
